In Summer 2013, Dr Jill Eyers from Chiltern Archaeology conducted an excavation dig at the site of St Dunstan’s Church in Monks Risborough, in order to extend the existing graveyard area.
Local PRPS member, Hayley Watkins wanted to document the dig to provide the parish with a photographic record of the project, including the finds, historical importance of the site and most importantly of all, the many local people who volunteered their time to be part of this unique event.
In collaboration with Jill Eyers, Hayley’s photographic ‘record’ soon grew into a fully published local history book “More Than Six-Feet-Under”. The book charts the progress of the dig – from the very first day clearing the site and breaking ground through to the final day on site. Included in it’s 80 full colour pages is detail on what was found (and there really were some remarkable finds), how these relate to Monks Risborough’s past, the contributions of the teams and individuals who worked on the site and even some medieval recipes to try at home!
The culmination of Jill’s comprehensive writing and Hayley’s super images make for a great book that’s something more special than the normal (sometimes rather dull) history books. They have obviously hit on a winning formula as Hayley and Jill have already had to order a second print run of the publication and are already well into producing their next book together on The Chilterns AONB, due in the shops Summer 2014.
