Steven gave us a most comprehensive and insightful talk on the “Photographers Input” at Orchard View Farm. He started by explaining that the photographer’s input involves all the technical and creative decisions made to produce an image, including camera settings, control of lighting, and application of compositional elements. For many of us it can become an automatic process and we run the risk of not realising the full potential by not considering all aspects that influence the final image. It requires subconscious training to enhance our approach and awareness. The talk aimed to revisit this process step by step after first using the Advanced Driving Test analogy.
Steven broke the processes down into three groups. Firstly the “Pre Camera” in which all the planning and consideration steps are done before picking up the camera. Then the “Camera” considering all the technical aspects of the camera controls and facilities. Finally, “Back Home” where you address the post processing and printing. Each of these 23 steps were then considered in depth.
In summary, the Photographers Input is making conscious decisions about all aspects of taking a Photograph through a combination of creative vision, technical skill, and artistic choices, including subject selection, composition (line, form, space), lighting, and camera settings like aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. With this level of awareness can we become Advanced Photographers?
