John started the presentation with an explanation on how a digital image is formed through the light falling on the sensor and being split into RGB at each of the sensor pixels and saved along with information on colour, bit depth and luminosity.
In a series of illustrations John then explained how layers worked as Pixel and Adjustment layers, the manipulation of the layer stack and the effect on the image. He showed how to merge several images together and use adjustment layers globally such as Levels, Black point, B&W, Curves and the effect of Blending Modes.
John then explained Masks associated with adjustment layers to apply effects targeted locally. The mantra “White Reveals and Black Conceals” mentioned frequently. He demonstrated using a number of images covering simple and more complex masking techniques and the usefulness of Luminosity Masks.
Unfortunately, when John came to do his final demonstration by processing a new image in real- time he realised his PC had lost some essential plugins and was unable to continue. He will do so on a future occasion.
He reminded members that there are a wealth of videos in the Photoshop Help tag and recommended that any manipulation is best carried out on a Duplicate background layer.
