The aim of this talk was to give members an insight into the “does and don’ts” of portrait photography. Steven started the workshop with a presentation outlining the theory and techniques for portraiture and enhanced the points with his own personal experiences. He then moved to a practical demonstration using his camera linked in real time to his laptop and projector so images he took were shown on the screen.
Mike was a willing volunteer (victim) to act as a “model” sat in a corner of the room near a window for natural light. Steven then took a series of images demonstrating the effect with natural light only at first and then the addition of various lighting effects including flash, diffusers and reflector. Members then were able to experiment with their own cameras with their newfound knowledge.
The workshop was well supported with 16 members and we welcomed Godfrey to our fold as a new member.
We give a huge thanks to Steven for giving us an excellent workshop and the opportunity for us to explore portraiture in a relaxed environment under his guidance.
A bit about our speaker – Steven’s interest in Photography started at a very early age while his father was working for Kodak. From that point onwards his interest began to grow. He started to work semi-professionally in the 1980’s capturing weddings on film and transitioned to digital in 2005 – around the time he joined PRPS. Steven also restarted working semi-professionally in 2006 through to 2016 capturing many weddings or portrait shoots. He also did some commercial photography as well as photographing many events. During this time, he also gained his Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society and co-founded Photrain (a photography training company) with fellow PRPS member Adam Lee.
These days, Steven can be found photographing wildlife or the diversified landscape the UK has to offer.
